Wuphons Reach - South Bend

South Bend is the reincarnation of River Bend, which was destroyed after only 25 years due to insolvable budget problems. Neighbors are Slade Canyon to the west and North Bend to the north.

Rebuilding from scratch

Since I had already done the first two steps (develop the terrain, check rail right-of-ways), I jumped straight into laying out the initial rails, roads, zones and services.

Starting zone layout. Population 2350, positive cash flow.
Mid-rise apartments filling in the residential zones. Due to cash flow problems while managing the growth, I did a pair of deals for the federal prison and the army base.
Dec '08 - slowly but surely getting there.

Drive-in theatre. Busy trains sending workers next door.
Ahhhh! My power plant is on fire!

2017 Planning for the next phase of growth

Once I had saved back up to $110k in the bank, I went and built my rail/road connections to Slade Canyon. This was not a cheap building project, more then once I almost reloaded the saved game (yes, I saved first this time), but in the end I stuck it out. Total cost to do all of this was around $60k (including costs of mistakes which added $10k to $20k). So when I play this city again, I'm going to have to spend some time at cheetah speed to rebuild my cash reserves.

2019 Checking tax rates

While preparing for my growth spurt, I took a quick look at my population / job graph and didn't like the trend that I was seeing in low-income residential population. (It means that I had my R$ tax rate set too high.)

2025 Commuting by tank?

One of the odder things I saw in South Bend was a tank wandering the streets of the city. I knew the sims were having trouble with commute traffic, but I didn't realize it had gotten so far out of hand.

Hmmm, commuting by tank?

2059 - Population 100,000 (Feb 1 2003)

Just a brag shot... but it also shows where my income and expenses were when I hit 100k.

Population 100k!

2060 Water Polution

In the following screenshots, I'm going to show you the trick of placing water filtration plants in order to get the best effect out of them. First, you'll see that I only started with a single water filtration plant in the upper part of the map near the river (green dot in the left side of the water polution). Looking at my water pollution graph, you'll see that I had creeped back above 50, so it was time to add another filtration plant or two. I chose to add (2) filtration plants, in the middle of the densest area of water pollution. Shot #2 shows the dramatic effect that this had on the pollution levels in that part of the city. Filtration plants also have a radius of effectiveness (not currently displayed as a green circle by SC4) and if you look at shot #3, you can see that there is a definite edge down along the right side of the city chart (showing the edge of the radius).
