Nags Head NC

Left Wilmington at 6am and got to the Cedar Island ferry terminal around 9:30am (just in time to catch the ferry). The ferry took about 2.25 hrs to make the crossing to Ocacroke Island.

Emerald Isle looks like a nice place to stay (outside of Morehead City).

Spent a good bit of time on Ocacroke Island (even did about a 90 minute bike ride). Then drove up to the north end and was the last car on the ferry (the ferries run frequently enough that it wouldn't have been an issue). After that I drove straight up to Nags Head to get to the hotel (I got up here around 6pm).

Odometer 001950 - Wilmington NC

Well, since I drove up this morning from Charleston and spent the afternoon touring the USS North Carolina battleship I've decided to get up to Nags Head NC a day early (the weather looks better for traveling on Saturday instead of Sunday). So this is the last night that I have access to dial-up connection (other than using the cell phone). Tomorrow is a big trip day, 2 ferry rides and touring the southern half of the outer banks (Ocacroke and Cape Hatteras).

I drove out to Wrightsville Beach NC this afternoon to see the ocean.

Looks like getting pictures posted will have to wait until I get home and have access to the high speed line.

Charleston SC

Well, trying to find a beach to photograph the sunrise was a bust. Not only because it took me just a little past sunrise to even find the shoreline, but also because I couldn't find a public access beach in a timely manner. So I walked out, took a picture [insert picture] and got back in the car to head down to Patriot's Point where all the ships are.

Patriot's Point was nice. I went on the USS Yorktown for a bit until it was time to catch the boat out to Fort Sumter. Then, once I got back from Fort Sumter I spent the rest of the day touring the Vietnam exhibit, the submarine, the destroyer, the coast guard ship, and then back aboard the aircraft carrier for the rest of the day.

Free the Charleston 5?

What is "Free the Charleston 5" about? I've been seeing bumper stickers and placards around Charleston today. Here's one of the links from Google, it has to do with 5 long shoremen who are in jail facing felony charges after a disturbance in January 2000. Here's a link to the ILWU page which is a large list of links to various stories about the issue.

Charleston SC

Gave up on Savannah for the sunrise ride, decided to head to Charleston. Got to Charleston SC around 10:30am and went into the SC Aquarium

Left the aquarium around noon and walked around town looking for a place to eat. Ate at the Saffron Deli on Bay St (very good food) then drove down to Battery Park for a while until a thunderstorm rolled in.

Spent the rest of the afternoon back at the aquarium (good thing I got my hand stamped). [lots of pictures] Big sea turtle in the main tank was on everybody's lips (they just got the turtle and it was in the local papers).

Early to bed, early to rise [lookup quote]

Reed Gold Mine - Bryan's hobby, pictures of the mine, Bryan blacksmithing, video of blacksmithing

Pictures of Bryan, Vicki, Alexa & house

"The Mexican" - Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts - gets gun, loses gun, gets gun, loses gun, gets gun, I lost the reason to watch the movie. The gay kidnapper interacting with Julia Roberts was interesting, but not enough to make up for the rest of the movie. If the back story had been done with more feeling and less corniness it would have made the overall story much more interesting and dramatic (this should not have been done as a comedy).

3000 Miles to Graceland

- baka, baka, baka; would have been better if the robbery planning was shown and more time was spent building up to the robbery. The lead actress came across as [woman with loose morals], then as [woman with loose morals] with baggage, and finally as [woman with loose morals] with baggage and issues. None of us felt any compassion for any of the characters and were rooting for the movie to end or them to kill off the characters (the one bad guy takes a zillion bullets and forever to die on the screen, long after the moment is over and over and over again). You would have thought that SWAT teams with laser sights would have used them earlier to take out the bad guy with a head shot. Zero chemistry between the mother and the kid, between the mother and the bad guy, or between the bad guy and the kid. The cameo by Ice-T is hokey, it's a bit part and his character wasn't given enough screen time (he should have been part of the original crew), especially where he's hanging upside down, zipping through the center of a firefight with no bullet-proof jacket, firing a pair of sub-machine guns at everyone (can you say "eye is attracted movement, arms bring gun up to fire at movement"?)...
