Sony DRU-500A Coasters
Ha! Success! (Well, my first one that seems to be clean... so far). Burned a Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-RW (v1.1 spec) as a DVD with about 1Gb of data and so far I'm not seeing any errors reading it back on the Sony DRU-500A drive (using CDCheck). Now, unlike last time, this time I set the drive for the slowest recording speed (1.0x? instead of 2.4x? forgot to look). Now to figure out whether I've got ahold of a thread to a fix for this problem or not.... (I'm still on firmware 1.0e - but slightly afraid that if I upgrade, Roxio's Easy CD Creator will stop recognizing the drive... I've heard rumors that this is the case and Roxio doesn't have a new patch yet for 1.0f or 1.0g.)
Bonus is that the DVD-RW platter was readable in my laptop's DVD drive without any errors.
Now I'm going to try a DVD+RW disc from Maxell (fushia colored packaging), but instead of recording at 2.4x like last time, I'll set it to 2.0x and see how it does (it was the only other option, no 1x option). Bleh - coaster. It bugs me that Roxio's software (doing a test and burn style) doesn't catch these errors during the validation post-burn.
(While trying to record a DVD-R, I saw the 8Mb buffer drop below 75%, even when recording at 1x speed... so it's possible that my main HD is too full and needs to be emptied and defragged some more.)
