Super Server
LOL, okay, so I have expensive tastes... I priced out a Dell PowerEdge 1600SC server to replace one of my home servers.
dual-Xeon 2.4Ghz CPUs 1Gb DDR SDRAM (2x512Mb) (4) 73Gb 10kRPM Ultra320 68pin SCSI HDs RAID-5 controller (~210Gb storage) $6200
Hmmm, I think that would be over-kill for what I need, ne? I only upgrade my home servers about once every 3-4 years, and the poor K6-2 450Mhz system is really struggling to stay in the race anymore. A cheaper option is of course to home-brew one (plus I get to re-use parts that I already have):
$500 dual-Xeon 2.4Ghz CPUs $500 motherboard (SuperMicro X5DAE) $300 1Gb ECC DDR266 (2x512Mb) $200 Promise FastTrak SX4000 RAID5 ATA/100 $400 (4) 80Gb IBM DeskStar 120GXP ATA/100 $500 misc parts -------- $2400 + software for a 240Gb server, and I possibly can shave some of the costs, although it's pretty much all rock bottom at the moment.
