USB Hard Drive Performance
I did some testing using PCMark2002 on my laptop's hard drive, the USB 1.1 hard drive hooked up to the laptop, the hard drive in my video editing machine, and a USB 2.0 hard drive hooked up to my video editing machine. The USB 1.1 hard drive was dirt-slow as I expected, but the USB 2.0 hard drive was almost as fast as the hard drive in my Toshiba Tecra 9200. On my video editing machine, I'm using a mirrored ATA/100 drive set (using the Promise FastTrak100 PCI card).
USB 1.1 HD: 29 0.9MB/s read 0.9MB/s write
USB 2.0 HD: 214 3.3-3.7MB/s write 11.3-11.7 MB/s read
Toshiba Tecra 9200 HD: 249 6.8-8.0MB/s write 7.9-12.2MB/s read
Mirrored 7200rpm HD: 546 9.0-10.5 MB/s write 17.0-32.4 MB/s read
