WinTV PCI Capture Card
Gave up on my ATI All-in-Wonder 128 card (an old 32Mb AGP capture/video card). Went out and got a Hauppauge WinTV-dbx PCI capture card. Going to also use the PICVideo MJPEG codec to do my captures.
720x480, 30fps 48kHz audio, 1 hour recordings: 56Gb uncompressed 24Gb MJPEG Q20 9.6Gb MJPEG Q19 5.9Gb MJPEG Q18
(think I'll try using Q19 for now)
Virtual VCR settings are: 720x480, YUV2, 29.969 fps, 48kHz audio, 16 bit stereo (no compression) using MJPEG at Q19. A 3 minute capture file was 667Mb, or 12.5Gb/hr (a bit higher then the numbers above). VirtualVCR will show this as being around 3.5 megabytes/sec in the "Transfer Rate" window. Another capture done off a cleaner source clocked in at 3.0 megabytes/sec (10.5Gb/hr). So the quality of your video source is what will drive how big your capture files end up being.
Q18 at the same resolution produces files that are around 1.5-1.6 megabytes/sec (5.5Gb/hr or so).
