Removing a Dead Active Directory Domain Controller
Removing a dead domain controller is always fun... when I tried to restore the dead domain controller's System State, the server then hosed itself (failed to boot with the boot loader errors). (Note: this server is running on different hardware then the old server.)
So, it was time to dig up google and find out How to remove domain controllers from ADSI. I had already seized the roles using NTDSUTIL, but I was still unable to delete the old domain controller in Active Directory Users and Computers. The article showed me how to install the LDP tool (part of the Win2000 CD, under \Support\Tools\), and how to connect in and removing the offending domain controller.
Also, when in Users and Computers, click on View, Advanced, go to the System container, and look for the outdated DC object under the File Replication Service (I actually had an even older dead domain controller listed).
