Thinkpad T60

We've recently switched from Toshiba Tecra machines over to the Thinkpad T43 line at work. The Toshiba M-series have been dropping in quality over the years and they've stopped putting the pointer device in the middle of the keyboard. As a touch-typist, I rely heavily on being able to nudge the mouse around with a fingertip rather then reaching for an awkward external mouse. (In fact, I hardly ever use the external mouse, unless I'm doing image work.)

That being said, I'm still using my Tecra 9100 from early spring of 2002. It has 1GB of RAM, a new and larger harddrive, but still works well. The backlight is fading a bit, but that could be fixed.

What interests me in the Thinkpad T60 line is that they'll be one of the first ones shipping with the new dual-core Intel chips. If you've ever used a dual-CPU machine, you'll understand the attraction. My dual-CPU desktop is extremely responsive to user input, even when a task is tying up one of the CPUs. To have that responsiveness in a laptop package is going to be very nice.

Still, nobody is mentioning prices for the new T60 line. My personal hope is that I'd be able to pick up a 2GB dual-core unit with the 1400x1050 screen for less then $2200. But until we see pricing sheets in early February, nobody can say for sure.
